Your First Hours as a Mom

first time mom

You might have anticipated how your first hours as a new mom will be once you found out you were expecting. While you’ve been preparing for your little one to come, it can be natural to feel anxious and apprehensive about motherhood. However, we’ve gathered together a few tips that we think will be beneficial to know in your first few hours as a mom.

Bonding

Your first few minutes holding your newborn baby can be the most precious. In most circumstances post-birth, the baby is placed straight onto the mother’s chest to help the skin on skin bonding as it helps release the bonding hormone oxytocin. Sometimes complications can occur or surgical procedures can delay your initial bonding time; however, the baby can still be placed by the mother side to further encourage bonding and recovery.

Stall the visitors

Your family and friends will be itching to see your new-born; however, it’s important for you and your partner to cherish your first few days alone with your baby. If you are finding it hard to hard to ask family members and friends, politely ask a loved one to help break the news on your behalf. As the early days of parenthood is the perfect time for you and baby to adjust to new life, there will be ample opportunity for well-wishers to come and wish you and baby well.

Dressing your baby correctly

Depending on when you give birth, finding the appropriate wear for your baby once it is home is essential in ensuring that baby is comfortable and safe. Newborn babies body regulation differs from adults, therefore they struggle to regulate their body temperature on their own, this is why it’s important to choose clothing that is breathable, simple and easy to take off. As a general rule of thumb, ensure you have enough clothing on hand if you have to dress up or down your baby due to the weather.

Rest

Creating a child can be one of the most rewarding achievements, but the days after can be exhausting and overwhelming at times. As new babies require a lot of attention in the first months, you may feel tired from the late-night feeds and overall body changes that can slow you down in the first weeks. While you might feel pressured to do everything, it’s vital to get enough rest where possible for the safety of both you and baby. If you have support from family and friends at this time, make sure to make use of them when possible to help take off any additional load.

Emotional Rollercoaster

Birth can have amazing effects on the body, both physically and mentally. However, the first 24 hours after birth can be a rollercoaster of emotions. From feelings of elation to sadness, it’s okay to feel like this as your hormones adjust. Once your body begins to stabilize, try not to worry, instead focus on the new addition to your family. SHARE
