Different Condom Types: The Benefits for Him & Her

condom types

It probably won’t surprise you that there isn’t a condom in the world that will fit every man. We are all different mentally and physiologically, which is why it is incredibly important to find the condom that is right for you. Of course, because of the huge variety on the market, you don’t need to stick to a standard condom, so make sure you try a range of different types to find what feels best for you: both in a safety-conscious way and a pleasurable way.

From ribbed to dotted condoms and latex free to textured condoms, wading through the market can be incredibly difficult. Thankfully, here at K-Y, we have put together a helpful guide to help you choose the right one for you.

What are ribbed condoms?

Ribbed condoms are best described as having little raised ridges running around them which have been strategically placed to create added sexual excitement. This is to satisfy those of us who struggle to feel anything when wearing a standard condom.

The use of a ribbed one can lead to a sense of friction and a higher level of enjoyment for both partners. This is because the ridges on the condom itself add pleasure to the penis as well as the vagina.

What is a dotted condom?

The raised dots on the outside of a dotted condom aim to increase pleasure. This is because they can create friction between the penis and the vagina, helping to increase enjoyment for the woman and also increasing pleasure to the man.

Why use a textured condom?

The purpose of a textured condom is to enhance sexual pleasure and intimacy with the hope of better confidence for both of you in your sexual intimacy. If you’re in a long-term relationship, experimenting with different types and textures of products could add some much-needed spice to the bedroom. Textured condoms have been cleverly designed to add extra pleasure.

Choosing between conventional condoms and textured condoms is an entirely personal choice. After all, there is absolutely nothing wrong with deciding you prefer the conventional variety over a textured product; it’s all down to what suits you and your partner best.

While ribbed and dotted condoms can be great for increasing stimulation, it could be the case that the stimulation is perhaps too much for you. In this respect, a regular, standard condom would be the better option and has also been safety tested.

What is a latex free condom?*

Latex is the material that was originally found to be the best all-round option for making a condom and has been used for over 100 years because of its incredible strength and elasticity properties. Unfortunately, however, some of us are allergic to it.

That’s why latex-free condoms are made from a different material. This could be polyisoprene, which means they are suitable for people who have that allergy to latex’s proteins.

A latex allergy means that using a condom could cause an adverse reaction in the most uncomfortable place – your groin. If you do have an allergy to latex, it could manifest itself in an itchy, uncomfortable rash that could lead to drying of the skin. As with any allergic reaction, there are different severities of it. If you feel you may have a latex allergy, be sure to consult your doctor.[1]

It’s worth noting however that latex-free condoms are not just designed for people who suffer from an allergy to latex either, they are popular with people who enjoy the feeling and different sensation they bring to love-making.

What are the benefits of latex free condoms?

It goes without saying that if you are allergic to latex then latex-free condoms will make a big difference - you should be free from any allergic reactions.

Polyisoprene condoms are generally a thinner condom, using less material to separate the penis and vagina. This thinner material can lead to a heightened sensation for both of you as it feels close to a naked penis. Perhaps even more of a plus point is that they also do not have that latex smell we recognise.

Every one of us is different, and every sexual experience is different each time, so it is hard to say which particular type of condom will become the one you prefer to use. However, if you do have sensitive skin or a latex allergy, you could save yourself a lot of hassle by using latex-free.
